How do electric vehicles (EVs) work?

EVs use energy stored in battery packs to power one or more electric motors that move the vehicle. Think of the battery pack as equivalent to the fuel tank in a conventional car, and the electric motors as equivalent to the engine. The battery packs can be recharged from an external source such as a home charger or a public charging station.

But not all EVs are created equal. There are several types of EVs, each of which is powered a bit differently: Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) have both an ICE and an electric motor, which assists only at low speeds. The battery is charged either by the combustion engine or through recuperation when braking.
